  1. My passport’s information is incorrect. My passport has a typographical error. What should I do?

If you notice an error in your passport, please go to the nearest Consular Office and inform them about the error so that it can be evaluated and rectified.  You may find the Consular Office nearest you at https://consular.dfa.gov.ph/directory

  1. Can I still use my maiden name in my passport even though I am married?

Yes, provided that you have not yet used your married name in any previous Philippine passport.

  1. What should I do, my name is on the DFA Watch List?

You may contact the Passport Division at passportconcerns@dfa.gov.ph

  1. When is a passport considered mutilated?

An ePassport is considered damaged or mutilated under the following conditions:

  • Data page or any information on it is rendered unreadable or has been torn removing any information from the page.
  • Passport chip has been damaged and is no longer readable.
  • Machine-readable zone (MRZ) is no longer readable or has been torn from the data page.
  • The photo on data page is no longer visible, has been tampered, or the quality is questionable.
  • Page/s have been torn out and are no longer available.
  • Cover has been unstitched from the booklet.
  • Stitching of booklet has been undone.
  • Booklet has been severely water-damaged/water-logged and/or visa stamps have bled out.

Should a passport be in any of the above conditions, the applicant must provide an Affidavit of Explanation.

  1. Can I apply for a passport even though I do not have a middle name?

Yes, as long as that is what is indicated in your birth certificate.

However, if you do have a middle name but it does not appear in your birth certificate, you need to have your birth certificate corrected first.  Please refer to https://psa.gov.ph/civilregistration/problems-and-solutions for the requirements and procedure.

Authentication of Documents (“Red Ribbon”)

  1. How do I get my documents authenticated?

Here is the procedure for authentication services:

Step 1: Fill out an application form (Maximum of 5 documents per application form).

Step 2: Present a valid ID upon submission of the documents to the processing window.

Step 3: Pay appropriate Authentication Fee (Php 100/document – 4 days processing / Php 200/document – 1 day) processing to the Cashier.

Step 4: Bring official receipt and claim the authenticated documents on the indicated release schedule.

  1. Does authentication need an appointment?

No appointment is needed for authentication services.

  1. Where can I submit documents for authentication? / Are authentication services available on Saturdays?

Authentication services are available only at the following Consular Offices:

  • DFA Aseana
  • DFA NCR-Northeast (Ali Mall)
  • DFA NCR-East (SM Megamall)
  • DFA NCR-West (SM Manila)
  • DFA NCR-South (Metro Gaisano Alabang) and
  • DFA San Fernando, Pampanga

Yes, authentication services are available from Monday to Saturday.  But authenticated documents are released only from Monday to Friday.

DFA Aseana does not have authentication services on Saturday.

  1. Can I send a representative to have my documents authenticated for me? What are the requirements?

Applicants must file/claim their documents personally.  If you are unable to do so, you may send your authorized representative who may file/claim documents on your behalf.  Your authorized representative must present a Special Power of Attorney, a photocopy of the applicant’s valid ID bearing his/her signature and the representative’s own valid ID bearing his/her signature and one photocopy.

Passport Courtesy Lane

  1. There are no available slots for a passport appointment. Can I walk in instead?

The following can avail of the Courtesy Lane Facility without the need of an online appointment:

  1. Senior Citizens (60 years and over) with proof of age:
  • A senior citizen is allowed one companion.
  • The companion of the senior citizen must be an immediate family member, i.e. spouse, siblings, adult children, adult grandchildren, and children-in-law of the senior citizen and must show proof of relationship.
  • If the companion is not an immediate family member, the companion has to show proof of travel arrangements (e.g. confirmed plane or hotel booking) with the senior citizen to be able to avail of the courtesy lane facility.
  1. People with Disabilities (PWDs) with proof of disability.
  • PWD is allowed one (1) companion.
  • The companion of the PWD must be an immediate family member, i.e. spouse, siblings, adult children, adult grandchildren, parents-in-law, and children-in-law of the PWD and must show proof of relationship.
  • If the companion is not an immediate family member, the companion has to show proof of travel arrangements (e.g. confirmed plane or hotel booking) with the PWD to be able to avail of the courtesy lane facility.
  1. Solo parent with valid solo parent card, and his/her minor children
  2. Minors seven (7) years old and below and his/her parents and minor siblings.
  3. Pregnant women
  • If pregnancy is not visible, the applicant must be present medical certificate/records.
  1. Overseas Filipino Workers (Land and Sea-based) with valid proof of status, such as:
  • Valid iDOLE card
  • Valid Employment contract
  • Valid work visa
  • Seaman’s book stamped at international border less than 365 days from the date of application.
  • Senior citizens, PWDs, solo parents, and their minor children, pregnant women, and OFWs have the option to choose from regular or expedited processing of their passport application.
  • The companions of the senior citizens and PWDs, minors seven (7) years old and below, their parents and minor siblings are to be assessed expedited processing fee because they are not entitled to use the courtesy lane; they are accommodated for their convenience.
  • All applications made on Saturdays – whether those entitled to use the Courtesy Lane or those accommodated for their convenience – shall be assessed expedited processing fees based on the relevant provision of the Passport Act.
  1. Is there a cut-off time/quota in the courtesy lane?

To the extent possible, we accommodate all applicants who are entitled to use the courtesy lane.  Consular Offices, however, may set limits depending on the number of applicants and the capacity of the Consular Office for the day.

  1. Can government employees avail of the courtesy lane?

Government employees may be accommodated in the courtesy lane at the DFA Consular Office in Aseana upon request and depending on the number of applicants and their capacity for the day.

 

Passport On Wheels

When will we have the Passport on Wheels in our local government unit, school, company, or organization?

Regarding the schedule of Passport on Wheels, kindly refer to your local government unit, school, company, or organization.

You may ask your local government unit, school, company, or organization to send a formal request to avail of the Passport On Wheels services.

 

Passport ePayment

  1. How do I pay through ePayment?

ePayment can be done in four easy steps:

  1. Visit http://passport.gov.ph and schedule your appointment.
  2. Pay your passport processing fee at any of our authorized Payment Centers.
  3. Print out the confirmed appointment packet that will be emailed to you after you have paid your passport processing fee.
  4. Personally show up at the DFA consular office on the date and time indicated in your appointment, bringing with you a printed copy of your confirmed passport appointment packet.

  1. The payment facility did not accept my ePayment. Why is that?

Your ePayment may not have been accepted for any of the following reasons:

  • Your ePayment reference number was expired or erroneous.
  • Your payment facility of choice is not an accredited partner of the DFA.
  • Your appointment was not successfully completed.

You will have to secure another appointment.

Passport Claiming and Delivery

  1. When can I claim my passport?

Please refer to your passport stub/receipt for your passport’s release date.

  1. What do I do if the courier has not delivered my passport on the release date?

Please refer to the tracking number on your courier claim stub.

  1. May I pick-up my passport on a Saturday?

Yes, all mall-based Consular Offices allow for passport release during Saturdays.  DFA Aseana does not release passports on Saturdays.

 

Passport Fixers

Is obtaining an appointment from fixers and passport appointment assistance services illegal?

Yes, it is a violation of the law.  Violators will be prosecuted and barred from applying for a passport.  Appointments not made through http://passport.gov.ph are not legitimate appointments.

Passport Appointment

  1. When will slots be opened? Why are there no available appointment slots?

Appointment slots for July to September 2018 are still available.  If you do not see available online appointment slots, it does not necessarily mean that they have been completely taken up.

Please CLICK REFRESH as online appointments become available from time to time.  Or you can CHECK THE NEXT OPENING as slots for July to September 2018 are made available at 12:00 noon and 9:00 pm, Mondays to Saturdays, except holidays.

  1. How can I set an appointment? / Can I set my appointment here at the DFA Facebook page? / Do I still need to set an appointment for renewal?

You need to set an online appointment at http://www.passport.gov.ph.

Appointment cannot be made on Facebook or any other platform.

All appointments are free.  Appointments not made through http://passport.gov.ph are not legitimate appointments.

  1. I made a mistake in filling out my application form. Will this affect my application? Will my appointment be cancelled?

The application form may be corrected based on your documents on the day of your appointment.  Please tell the passport processor about it.

Please be reminded that any incorrect information that is inputted in the application form may result in delay in your application.  Any misrepresentation on your part may be considered grounds for refusal or cancellation of your appointment.

  1. My passport will expire on (date). Can I renew it now?

Passports must be valid for at least 6 months from date of departure.  We suggest that you renew your passport 10 months before the date of expiration.

  1. I lost my passport, what should I do?

An appointment is necessary for ALL lost passports and applicants will need to submit documents required of first time applicants.

In case of lost or stolen VALID passport, you will be required further to submit a Police Report and Affidavit of Loss.  There will be a 15-day clearing period prior to the processing of application for the replacement of a lost valid passport.

In case of lost EXPIRED passport, you will be required further to submit an Affidavit of Loss; a Police Report is no longer necessary.

  1. How much is the passport processing fee? How long will the processing take?

Passport processing fees for both new applications and renewal are as follows:

Regular Processing – P 950.00

Expedited Processing – P 1,200.00

Penalty for Lost and Mutilated Passports – P 350.00

For applications made at Consular Offices in Metro Manila, processing and releasing of passport take 15 working days for regular processing and 7 working days for expedited processing.

For areas outside Metro Manila, processing and releasing of passports take 20 working days for regular processing and 10 working days for expedited processing.

For all Philippine Foreign Service Posts, processing and releasing of passports take around 4-6 weeks.  The above timetables do not include courier delivery.

  1. Where can I find my appointment code?

The appointment code would be sent to the email you used in the application form.

Please also check for the appointment code in the spam folder or trash folder in your email as your email provider may direct it to these folders.  If you have not received it, you may contact the Appointment Hotline for assistance (02) 234-3488.

  1. Can I reschedule my appointment? How do I reschedule my appointment?

Yes, you can reschedule your confirmed appointment by clicking the reschedule button.

Please note that:

  • You can only reschedule weekday appointment to another weekday;
  • You can only reschedule once; and
  • Rescheduling is subject to availability of appointment slots.
  1. Can I come late to my appointment?

No.  Please be at the site no more than 30 minutes before your scheduled appointment.

  1. What will happen to my passport appointment if for any reason the date was declared a non-working day?

DFA will reschedule your appointment and will issue an advisory for the purpose.

  1. Can I cancel my appointment?

Yes, you may cancel your appointment by clicking https://www.passport.gov.ph/appointment/view

Please be reminded that by cancelling your appointment you forfeit your payment.

  1. If I have an important/urgent travel, may I be accommodated at the courtesy lane?

Yes, but subject to the evaluation by the consular officer of the proof of the importance/urgency of your travel.

  1. I am currently abroad, can my mom/representative accompany my minor child for his / her passport application?

Yes, a representative may accompany a minor child in applying for a passport.

  1. Can I apply for a passport even though there are mistakes/missing entries in my birth certificate?

By law, the entries in the birth certificate should be followed.  If there is a mistake or missing entry in the birth certificate, the mistake should be corrected and the missing entry supplied prior to applying for a passport.

  1. Is NSO still accepted? Should I get a PSA copy?

Yes, NSO copies of certificates are still accepted.

  1. Is NBI Clearance required for passport application?

NBI Clearance is only a supporting document for certain cases.  Please refer to this link for the requirements: https://consular.dfa.gov.ph/passport.

  1. Will my IDs with my maiden name be accepted?

Yes, you may still use your IDs with your maiden name in applying for a passport, as long as you present your marriage conract.

  1. What are your operating hours? (depending on consular office)

DFA Aseana

  • 7:30 a.m. – 5:00 a.m. (Monday to Friday)
  • 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 a.m. (Saturday)

Mall-based Cos

  • Generally open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (Monday to Saturday)

Cos Tuguegarao and Zamboanga

  • 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (Monday to Friday)

The DFA has made some changes in the usual process of reserving an appointment slot for your passport application (or renewal).  If you are setting an appointment at any of the DFA offices and satellite branches within Metro Manila, you will be required to pay for your passport fee using the DFA ePayment Portal before the system secures your slot.

If you want to know more about this new process (and to save you the hassle of running back and forth because you “were not informed”), click this link that will take you to the complete step-by-step procedure.  This is a website I discovered in one of my many. many research and realized that they have everything I need to know about my government-issued IDs such as my passport.

Take note that this is applicable for Metro Manila appointments for now; the DFA is working at having this implemented in the entire country within the year.

My passport is due to expire this month so I really made it a point to have it renewed before the end of May.  It was pretty difficult to get an appointment slot through the www.passport.gov.ph website but I finally was able to secure one last June 2, 2018.

This was not the first time I got an appointment online that is why I was mildly surprised when I received an email from the DFA, instructing me to pay for my passport first, before they can confirm my appointment.  I had to do it fast because if after 48 hours and no payment is posted under my appointment, the slot will be up for grabs in the passport again.

I want to share my experience in today’s blog, to help those who may still not be aware of the DFA’s slightly new process of securing appointments, especially if you chose to have your passport renewed at the DFA Aseana branch.  This new process will be implemented in other DFA branches until they have covered all branches by August 2018.

Step 1: Visit the www.passport.gov.ph to schedule your appointment.

You have to have stable internet connection (and a lot of patience and perseverance!) to get this done.  Also, it would be best to have your old passport handy when filling out the online forms.

Step 2: Pay your passport processing fee at any of the DFA’s authorized Payment Centers.

You can pay at WalterMart, Bayad Center outlets, Villarica Pawnshops, 7-11 stores, ecPay, and Western Union outlets.  I paid mine at the Bayad Center in Robinson’s Ermita.

Here’s my actual experience at that branch:

The teller told me that my payment will post after 24 hours.  I got a bit worried because I had a 48-hour deadline to beat and already, I was beyond 24 hours at the time I was making my payment at Robinson’s.  The teller said that I need not worry because anytime my payment posts, DFA will see the exact date and time when I made the payment and they will know that I paid before the due date.  My appointment was on a Saturday, I was making the payment on a Tuesday – about 3 days ahead of my appointment.

It took me a few minutes to decide if I should hand my payment to the teller or if I should search for a different payment center that can promise me real-time posting of my payment.  In the end, the teller was able to convince me and so I handed her my payment of Php 1,250 (Php 1,200 for the passport and Php 50 service fee for Bayad Center).  She issued me a receipt and instructed me to keep it and bring it with me on my appointment.

Step 3: Print out the confirmed appointment packet that will be emailed to you after you have paid your passport processing fee.

This one I got a few minutes after I left Robinson’s; I printed the documents as soon as I got to the office and attached the receipt that the teller gave me earlier.

Step 4: Personally show up at the DFA consular office on the date and time indicated in your appointment.

Bring with you a copy of your confirmed appointment packet and other required documents and IDs such as you NSO birth certificate, NSO marriage certificate (if you wish to change your maiden last name to your married last name).

What is the DFA ePayment Portal?

This is an upgrade to the Online Appointment System that enables passport applicants to pay their passport processing fees through selected payment centers nationwide and eventually through the use of credit and debit cards, and through over-the-counter cash transactions in selected banks.

When will the DFA ePayment Portal be launched?

  • ASEANA: First week of June 2018
  • NCR: On or before the first week of July 2018
  • Nationwide: On or before the first week of August 2018

How does the DFA ePayment Portal work?

Those who are renewing or applying for Philippine ePassports will now be required to prepay the passport processing fees using the DFA ePayment Portal as part of the Online Appointment System.

Just follow these simple steps:

  1. Visit passport.gov.ph and schedule an appointment
  • Read all the reminders carefully before agreeing to the Terms and Conditions of the Online Appointment System.
  • Choose a DFA Consular Office where you wish to apply for or renew your passport.
  • Pick the date and time when you wish to apply for or renew your passport.
  • Fill out all the required fields by providing the information being asked.
  • Carefully review all the details of your application before clicking SUBMIT.
  • Choose your desired passport processing type (expedited or regular processing) before clicking PROCEED TO PAYMENT.
  • Take note of the reference number that will be emailed to you.
  1. Proceed to your preferred Payment Center to pay the passport processing fee.
  • Present your reference number at the Payment Center upon payment of the passport processing fee.
  • One reference number corresponds to one transaction. If you are paying for multiple reference numbers, you need to pay separately for each reference number.
  • Keep the receipt that will be issued to you.
  1. A confirmed appointment packet will be sent to your email once the payment has been successfully processed. Click the link to your passport appointment packet and PRINT OUT the following contents that you need to bring with you during your scheduled appointment.
  • Checklist with your indicated schedule.
  • Confirmed Application Form with the bar code, appointment reference number (ARN), and eReceipt number.
  • Two copies of the eReceipt.
  1. Personally show up at the DFA Consular Office on the date and time indicated in your appointment and make sure to bring a printed copy of your confirmed passport appointment packet and other required documents and IDs.

Is the payment reference number specifically assigned to one payment center?

No, a reference number is universal to all payment centers so you can conveniently pay at any of the authorized payment centers.

Can I use my payment reference number more than once? 

No, a reference number can only be used once.

Where can passport applicants pay their passport processing fees? 

  • Applicants can pay the passport processing fee through any of the following Payment Centers.
    • Bayad Center
    • ecPay
    • Pera Hub
    • Robinson’s Business Center and Department Stores
    • Waltermart Department Store
    • 7-11
    • USCC (Western Union)
    • Villarica Pawnshop
    • Other Payment Centers as well as the credit/debit card payment facility will be made available soon.

 How much do applicants have to pay? 

Passport applicants will need to pay Php 1,200 for expedited processing and Php 950 for regular processing.  A Php 50 convenience fee is charged by authorized Payment Centers on top of the processing fees.

Can the convenience fee and passport processing fee be refunded in case the applicant fails to show up during his/her scheduled appointment?

 No, a refund cannot be processed.

How do I get in touch with DFA in case I have questions or concerns about the ePayment Portal?

Question: Can I apply for a passport even if my gender in my PSA birth certificate is wrong? I can have this corrected but that will take time. I already have an appointment with the DFA and I need my passport asap.

Answer: You may go ahead and appear at the DFA on the date of your appointment, bring all the required IDs and supporting documents as listed in the passport.gov. website.  You may be required by the DFA to submit an Affidavit of Undertaking in support of your claim that your birth certificate is undergoing a correction. Take note that the DFA may also simply advise you to come back when a copy of your birth certificate is already available.  It is up to you to explain to them why you still cannot execute a copy of the document.

Question: My wife and I will be accompanying our 3-year-old son for his passport application. Can we both access the priority lane so we can have our passports renewed at the same time?

The Priority Lanes at DFA offices are reserved for Senior Citizens, OFWs, PWDs, pregnant women, and children below 7 years old.  Only one companion is allowed to be with the applicant inside the DFA premises; only this companion may take advantage of the no-appointment privilege.

Question: My middle and last names were interchanged in my birth certificate so that my last name appears to be my middle name, and my middle name appears to be my last name.  What do I do? 

This can be corrected by filing a Petition for Correction at the LCR of the city or municipality where the birth was registered.  It would be wise to prepare copies of your parents’ PSA birth certificates as well to serve as supporting documents to your petition.

Question: When our daughter was born, we weren’t married yet.  We placed a false date of marriage in our daughter’s birth registration. Now we are already married, how do we correct the date of marriage in our child’s birth certificate?

Never, under any circumstance, place false information in your civil registry documents.  These types of cases need to be referred to a lawyer and may undergo a court proceeding.

Question: My child is 2 years old and is already registered at the LCR.  Can I add three more letters to his name when I get his PSA birth certificate?  Is there a fee for this and how much?

If the error is considered clerical (typographic error), you may simply file a petition for correction.  However, if the petitioner wants to “change” the name (in this case, add a few letters to the original name), you will be asked by the LCR why you wish to do so.  Your request may be granted (or denied!), depending on the veracity of your reason for changing the name.

Question: Will the DFA accept the LCR petition letter as proof that the spelling of my name in my birth certificate is already in process. I already have an appointment for passport interview.

No.  You will have to wait until your PSA birth certificate is made available.  The DFA will only accept birth certificates in PSA Security Paper.

Question: Can we apply for the late registration of birth certificate of a deceased person?  We need his birth certificate so we can claim the death benefits. 

You will have to explain to the LCR why you need to “late register” the birth of a deceased person.  Normally, this type of request is not allowed.

Question: I am scheduled to pick up my PSA birth certificate on February 13, 2018 between 1PM to 4PM at the Releasing Area, 5th floor of PSA Sta. Mesa. However, I can’t make it to Manila on the said date.  Is it okay if I pick it up after February 13?

Yes.  Requested PSA documents are kept on file for 30 days until the requesting party comes to claim the document.  PSA reserves the right to dispose of the documents if these remain unclaimed for more than 30 days.

Question: When I was 18 years old, I was “married” to my girlfriend who was only 17 years old then. We separated a few years later and I found out she got married to another man. I am planning to marry my partner too but when I requested for my CENOMAR, the details of my previous marriage are written on the document.  When I asked my ex, she said that her CENOMAR did not show the same.  What do I do?

In order for you to be allowed to remarry, your previous marriage must be dissolved by virtue of an annulment.  There is a huge possibility that your petition for an annulment will be easily granted because both you and your ex-wife were underage at the time you were supposedly married.

Question: I had my birth certificate “endorsed” by the LCR to the PSA.  How many days or weeks or months does it usually take before I am able to get a PSA copy of my birth certificate?

Normally, a week after you are given a copy of the finality an endorsement with the courier receipt by the LCR, you may begin following up at the PSA Sta. Mesa office, building 2.  Bring all the documents given to you by the LCR as proof of your transaction.

Securing a passport appointment online with the DFA has become a laborious task for Filipinos as of late.  It has become close to impossible to snag a date and time to visit your preferred DFA branch for your passport application or renewal to be processed.  Pinoys, especially those who travel frequently for work and business, could not help but vent their frustration (and desperation!) through social media, blogs, and random television and radio interviews.  And why not, when one’s right to travel abroad is practically hindered simply because the Department of Foreign Affairs could not accommodate the volume of applicants.

This practice, however, of airing grievances in public opens doors to more problems than solutions.  While the DFA heeded the public’s clamor to open more appointment schedules (and soon!), scalawags also found an opportunity to earn fast, dishonest cash out of the public’s desperation to get their travel documents.  It wasn’t long before social media channels became tools for fixers to start working their charm to unassuming Filipinos who could not wait to get an appointment with the DFA online.

Of course, the DFA was quick to respond to the alarming number of scams happening right under its nose.  Through the help of investigators, they were able to uncover four types of scams that fixers employ to pick on passport applicants.

To spread awareness and warn the public from falling into the traps of these heartless crooks, we lifted some important information about passport appointment scammers and fixers and are sharing it in our page.  We still believe that awareness and vigilance will help us get ahead of these criminals and save us the trouble of wasted time, money, and effort.

Types of Passport Fixers

  1. Fixers who offer slots for a fee but do not actually get the promised appointments.

Applicants will be asked to pay a certain amount that supposedly buys them an appointment slot with the DFA.  They are given application forms to fill out, complete with barcodes and other appointment details.  Everything looks authentic except that the entire process is a hoax.  Come appointment date, the poor applicant is informed by the DFA that he or she does not have an appointment and the documents given to her by the fixer are fake.

  1. Fixers who sell courtesy lane passes.

The DFA accommodates Senior Citizens, PWDs, pregnant women, children 7 years old and below, Solo Parent ID holders, and migrant workers in its Priority Lanes.  These applicants no longer need to set an appointment online and can simply visit any DFA office anytime for their passport application.

Crooks sell this privilege to people who cannot get an appointment online.

Of course, the trade is illegal and the privilege is non-existent.

  1. Obtaining endorsements from government agencies.

This is more commonly known as an inside job where the fixer (who stays outside the DFA offices) are in cahoots with a government employee who supposedly has access to the appointments.  They sell these endorsements to passport applicants – endorsements could be genuine, but the fact that it is being sold makes it illegal.

  1. A fixer fills out an online application form using the personal information of their clients.

No one should apply on your behalf, not even fill out your online application form.  If anyone offers to do this for you for a fee, know that you are already being scammed.

Ultimately, the idea is to make the applicant believe that he or she has been given a confirmed appointment with the DFA, minus the hassle of waiting for dates and times to be freed up online, in exchange for a few thousands of pesos.  The DFA does not sell these appointment slots and so anyone who does is automatically considered a fixer.  And any transaction made with these crooks will not be honored by the DFA, no matter how much money you spent to get the appointment confirmed.

As the famous saying goes, walang manloloko kung walang magpapa loko.

The quickest answer to this question is yes.  In fact, it is highly advisable to have your passport renewed before it expires as most countries require that your passport be valid for at least six months beyond the date of your departure.

Here are a few more pointers that frequent travelers need to know about passport renewals:

  1. Frequent travelers must not wait until their passports are nearing expiration before they have it renewed.  If your work or business requires you to travel often, you must renew your passport once you have used up half of its pages.
  2. In urgent cases when you need to travel but only have less than six months validity on your passport, the Consulate may extend its validity under the following circumstances:
    • If your passport expired within the last calendar year;
    • If your current passport is not an e-passport (it does not have the symbol for a microchip on its front cover);
    • You have already applied for the renewal of your passport and are just waiting for its release;
    • The reason for your travel is an emergency such as the death of a relative or sudden illness of a family member.  Such cases must be supported by documentary proof (doctor’s certification, emails, and other correspondences).
  3. If your passport expires while you are abroad, you may apply for a temporary travel document to allow you to travel back to the Philippines and have your passport renewed.  You may get this at the Philippine Embassy in the country where you are located.
  4. Newly married women have the option to change their last name upon renewal of their passports; however, this is not mandatory.  A married woman may keep her maiden last name in her passport if she so wishes. Should she decide to change her last name to her husband’s, she will have to retain this name until her husband passes away or when her marriage is legally dissolved (as in an annulment recognized by Philippine laws).
  5. Filipinos who are naturalized as US citizens lose their privilege to renew their Philippine passports.  If their passports are still valid at the time of their oath-taking in US soil, these are automatically invalidated.  They may apply for a Philippine passport upon reacquisition of their Filipino citizenship.

A basic requirement for passport renewal is the submission of the expired (or expiring passport) so the DFA can cancel its validity.  But what if the old passport has gone missing?

Here’s how you can renew a lost and expired passport:

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Personal appearance.
  • Confirmed appointment.
  • No need to submit a passport size photo.
  • Submit same documents required for first-time passport applicants.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS in case the passport was lost and cannot be found:

  • Submit a Notarized Affidavit of Loss (with detailed explanation on when, where, and how the passport got lost).
  • If the lost passport is still valid, submit a Police Report.
  • If available, bring a photocopy of the first page of the lost passport.

Take note that there will be a 15-day clearing period prior to the processing of an application for replacement of a lost valid passport.

IN CASE PASSPORT WAS ALREADY DECLARED LOST BY THE APPLICANT BUT EVENTUALLY WAS FOUND AND RETURNED TO THE APPLICANT:

  • Submit a Notarized Affidavit of Retrieval (with detailed explanation on when, where, and how passport was found).
  • Original and photocopy of the first and last page of the passport.

IN CASE OF MUTILATED OR DAMAGED PASSPORTS:

  • Submit a Notarized Affidavit of Mutilation (with a detailed explanation of when, where, and how the passport got mutilated or damaged).
  • Original and photocopy of the first and last page of mutilated or damaged passport.

IN CASE APPLICANT WAS ISSUED A TRAVEL DOCUMENT:

  • Original Travel Document
  • Submit a Notarized Affidavit of Explanation Regarding Issuance of Travel Document (with a detailed explanation of when, where, and why the applicant was issued a travel document).
  • Original and photocopy of the first and last page of canceled passport (if the passport is still in the possession of the applicant).

It is not advisable to pose as a first-time passport applicant if you lost your passport.  The DFA will see your previous passport details anyway and you will be required to submit the same documents (affidavit of loss, etc.) as listed above.  Your appointment will be wasted and you may run the risk of being placed under questionable applications.

Now that you have finally set an appointment for your passport application, it is time to begin preparing the requirements you need to bring.  Here’s a summary of all the things you need to know when applying for a Philippine Passport at any DFA office:

  1. Personal appearance is required for all applicants.
  2. A confirmed appointment is required for all applicants except senior citizens, infants, and minors below 1-year-old and OFWs. For OFWs, sufficient proof must be submitted such as a valid employment contract or OEC.
  3. Earrings and contact lenses are not allowed during data capture. Smiling with visible teeth is also not allowed.
  4. Check all the data in the computer monitor and in the Enrolment Certificate before signing it.
  5. Only immediate family members are allowed to get the passport on behalf of the applicant. Immediate family members include father, mother, brother, sister, spouse, and children of legal age.
  6. The passport shall be released to an immediate family member only with the proper authorization letter. Passport of a minor applicant shall be released to parents only or to an authorized representative with Special Power of Attorney and Affidavit of Support and Consent.
  7. Passports unclaimed after six months will be canceled per Department Order No. 37-03.
  8. Check all data in the received e-passport upon release.
  9. The number of processing days may vary depending on the location of the Regional Consular Office where the application was filed.
  10. The Department may require additional supporting documents as may be necessary, especially for applicants with dual citizenship and with foreign-sounding family names to prove citizenship.

For First-time Passport Applicants:

  • Regular processing (15 working days): P950.00
  • Express Processing (7 working days): P1,200.00

For Renewal of Passport:

  • Regular processing (15 working days): P950.00
  • Express Processing (7 working days): P1,200.00

For Replacement of a lost expired passport:

  • Regular processing (15 working days): P950.00
  • Express Processing (7 working days): P1,200.00

For replacement of lost valid passport:

  • Regular processing (15 working days): P950.00
  • Express Processing (7 working days): P1,200.00
  • Please take note that there is an additional fee of P200 for a lost valid MRRP/MRP or P350 for a lost valid e-passport.
