EC Death Benefit Claims May Now Be Filed Online

The Employees’ Compensation (EC) program was implemented as an additional layer of protection and assistance for employees and workers who may suffer job-related ailments, injuries, or even death. An employee who gets terminally ill or disabled as a result of his duties and official functions, or meets an accident at the workplace, are compensable under the EC program. If the employee dies while still gainfully employed, his dependents are likewise entitled to monetary claims.

This blog shall discuss the requirements and processes involved when filing a Death Benefit claim online through the My.SSS channel. Read on.

First thing we need to remember: The online filing of the EC Death Claim is open only to qualified dependent legal spouses.

How to know if a legal spouse is qualified for an EC Death Claim:

  • The surviving spouse must not have re-married after the EC Member spouse passed away.
  • The surviving spouse must not have cohabitated with another person before or after the member spouse passed away.

Requirements when filing an EC Death Benefit Claim online:

  • Claimant’s SS number and My.SSS account. To know how to create a My.SSS account, click this link: How To Create A MySSS Account
  • UMID ATM or any of the approved bank or e-wallets and enrolled in the Disbursement Account Enrollment Module (DAEM) of the MySSS portal.   • Active or retained SS number of deceased member (spouse).
  • All other documentary requirements for the EC Death Benefit Claims such as:
    • PSA death certificate of deceased member
    • BPN 105 (Report of Death)
    • DDR-1 Form (Death Claim Application)
    • PSA birth certificates of minor children
    • PSA marriage certificate of member

Process:

  • Logon to your MySSS Member account.
  • Under the Benefits tab, click Apply for Death Claim
  • On the next page, click on Proceed
  • Provide all the needed information in the succeeding page then choose Death Benefit Claim and then click on Proceed.
  • On the next page, choose the cause of death and then click on Proceed.
  • If the cause of death is due to illness, the surviving spouse must proceed to the nearest SSS branch for a medical evaluation to be conducted by the Medical Evaluation Section of the branch. If this is your case, please click on OK to cancel your online transaction.
  • If the claimant is qualified for the monthly death benefit pension, the screen will display the estimated pension amount and the date when this will be released to the surviving spouse. The amount will include the P1,150 additional benefit. Click on Proceed.
  • Click on the OK button to proceed with the online filing of the EC Death Benefit Claim.
  • Choose YES or NO as your answers to the questions on the next page. Provide the SS number under Other Pension Benefit, if applicable. And then click Proceed.
  • Choose Disbursement from the dropdown menu and then click on Proceed.
  • At this point in your application, you will need the scanned copies of the documentary requirements. Upload the JPEG or PDF files of the documentary requirements for the EC Death Benefit Claim and then click on Proceed.
  • If the claimant is also the same person who filed the Funeral Benefit claim, upload a copy of the PSA marriage certificate of the deceased member, Report of Death (BPN-105) and other supporting documents.
  • If the claimant did not file for Funeral Benefit claims, upload the PSA marriage and death certificates of the deceased member, Report of Death (BPN-105), and other supporting documents.
  • Confirm the certification by clicking on the Certify and Proceed button on the next page.
  • The next screen will tell you if you have successfully submitted the EC Death Benefit Claim application. Just click on OK to fully confirm your submission and then click on PRINT to generate an acknowledgement receipt. The acknowledgement receipt shall include the details of the submitted EC Death Benefit Claim.
  • Check your email for a notification of your successful submission of the EC claim.

Important Reminders:

  1. The processing time for EC Death Benefit Claims will start as soon as the SSS receives the complete application requirements through the MySSS portal.
  2. The proceeds of the EC Death Benefit shall be credited to the UMID card of the claimant. The UMID card must be properly enrolled as an ATM or chosen disbursement account enrolled in the DAEM.
