How To Get A Comprehensive Driver’s Education Certificate

Every driver wanting to renew his or her license will now have to take the Comprehensive Driver’s Education (CDE) and pass it. And by “pass” they mean you have to be able to earn the certificate before your license renewal application is processed. Flunk it and you sit in the passenger seat.

What is the Comprehensive Driver’s Education?

The CDE isn’t actually new, as it is considered as just a refresher course for drivers. CDE covers:

  • Road safety
  • Traffic laws
  • Driver’s responsibilities
  • Traffic rules and regulations
  • Penalties for violations

Pass it and you may just be given a 10-year validity on your shiny new license (assuming you do not have previous violations).

Is this available nationwide?

Initially, it will be implemented in the Central Office Licensing Section and the Quezon City Licensing Center. They began yesterday, October 28, 2021. The rest of the NCR offices of the LTO will follow suit on November 3. An official announcement will be made for the rest of LTOs in the country.

Where and how do I take the CDE Program?

You may take the course offline or by visiting an LTO Driver’s Education Center or at any LTO-accredited driving school. Or you can take it online via the Land Transportation Management System Portal (LTMS).

How to take the Driver’s License Renewal Course ONLINE:

  • Visit the LTMS portal
  • Go to e-Learning
  • Click on Driver’s License Renewal Course.

You will be given access to an audio-visual course which will take less than five hours to finish. Taking the course (online or on-site) and viewing the presentation materials on the LTO website are free of charge.

How do I get the CDE certificate?

If you attend the CDE program on-site, your exam will be conducted on-site as well. If you take the program online, then you take the online exam via the portal.

Passing scores:

  • Non-professional: 50% or at least 13 correct answers out of 25 questions.
  • Professional: 50% or at least 13 correct answers out of 25 questions.

Your certificate will be issued once you pass the exam. Present your certificate to the LTO Licensing Renewal Office upon filing of your driver’s license renewal application.

Didn’t pass the test? You can get a retake test. You can keep taking it until you pass.

Good luck, drivers!
